Background – What is diversity?

Diversity refers to what makes us different. It includes our lives experiences, personalities, and beliefs. It is the sum of all our differences that shapes our worldview, perspective, and approach. It is about recognising, valuing and respecting differences based upon ethnicity, gender and race.

Diversity also encompasses a wide range of unique characteristics and experiences such as communication style and career path, education level, geographical location, income level and marital status. Inclusion is when people feel valued and are respected. No matter what their circumstances or personal characteristics, no matter where they live:

  1. - Have the chance to realize their combined and individual potential
  2. - Have access to resources and opportunities
  3. - Can contribute their best to every encounter
  4. - Contribute their talents and perspectives to improve the organization
  5. - They can bring more to their jobs.
  6. - Feel a sense belonging.

Equality is the right to participate in public life freely and equal, such as in the workplace or education. Every worker has the right to be protected from discrimination, harassment and victimization by anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation.

Equal opportunity is an integral part the employment cycle. It applies to recruitment, retention and performance management, promotion, talent identification, succession planning, remuneration professional development, and termination of employment.

Intersectionality is a way to see people's experiences in relation to their socio-economic background, gender, race, and sexuality. These differences can be combined or overlapped to create a unique identity. Individual identities can change or merge depending on where they are located (for example, life stages). Understanding intersectionality means understanding the many forms of discrimination and exclusion one might experience at any given moment (e.g., gender and race).
