Welcome to TLILIC0016 Licence to Operate a Bridge and a Gantry Crane training course. Licence class (CB).

Once competent you can apply for a CB Licence.

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate bridge cranes and gantry cranes safely. 

Bridge crane means a crane that: 

  1. consists of a bridge beam or beams, that are mounted to end carriages at each end. 

  2. can travel along elevated runways. 

  3. has one or more hoisting mechanisms arranged to traverse across the bridge. 

Gantry crane means a crane that: 

  1. Consists of a bridge beam or beams supported at one or both ends by legs mounted to end carriages. 

  2. Can travel on supporting surfaces or deck levels, whether fixed or not.

  3. Has a crab with one or more hoisting units arranged to travel across the bridge.

This unit applies to the activities of a person operating a bridge crane or gantry crane that is: 

  1. controlled from a permanent cabin or control station on the crane. 

  2. remotely controlled and having more than three powered operations. 

A person performing this work is required to hold a bridge and gantry crane HRWL. 

This unit requires a person operating a bridge crane or gantry crane to: 

  1. plan for the work/task. 

  2. prepare for the work/task. 

  3. perform work/task. 

  4. pack up.

This unit of competency is subject to legislative and regulatory requirements. 

This unit is based upon the licensing requirements in Part 4.5 Model Work Health and Safety Regulations (WHS) and meets Commonwealth and state and territory requirements for HRWL. 

The National Assessment Instrument is the mandatory assessment required by the HRWL in order to operate the relevant licensing class, as detailed in the unit.

  • north/south

  • east/west

This also includes the use of load estimation techniques and slinging to move a weight.

The bridge crane consists of a bridge beam with a carriage at each end. This carriage is capable of traveling along elevated runways and has one or more hoisting mechanism arranged for traversing across the bridge.

A gantry crane consists of a bridge beam supported at either end by legs mounted on carriages. It can travel on deck levels or supporting surfaces fixed or not.

Do Queensland residents need a licence?

To operate a bridge crane or gantry that:

  • Controlled by a permanent cabin, control station or telescoping crane.

  • Remotely controlled with three or more powered operations.

One hoist that can perform four different powered functions, e.g. The hoist can be used for traversing, travelling and hoisting.

Multiple hoists that have four or more powered operation e.g. Two non-synchronised hoists will typically have five powered operations: traversing, hoisting and travelling.

The following individuals must have a dogging High Risk Work Licence, or one of three rigging HRW licenses:

Anyone other than a licensed bridge crane or gantry operator who uses judgement to estimate a load or select the lifting methods and equipment for slinging on a bridge crane or gantry.

Anyone who directs a bridge or gantry operator to move a load when the load is not visible to the crane operator.

What will you learn

  1. Task requirements are identified from work orders or equivalent, a lift plan is confirmed with associated personnel and a site inspection conducted in accordance with workplace procedures. 

  2. Working area is inspected and appropriate paths for operating the bridge or gantry crane and moving/placing load/s in work area are assessed and determined in accordance with workplace procedures.

  3. Bridge or gantry crane Rated Capacity (RC) and lifting gear Working Load Limit (WLL) are established for the load/s and work/task requirements in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

  4. Consultation with workplace personnel is established and maintained to ensure all crane and lifting operations are clear and consistent with site requirements in accordance with a lift plan and workplace procedures. 

  5. Risk control measures for hazards identified are checked for implementation in accordance with the lift plan and safe work procedures.

  6. Lifts are determined within the RC of the bridge or gantry crane in accordance with load chart/s and lift plan. 

  7. Hook block is safely positioned over the load in accordance with safe work procedures and if crane is controlled from cabin following directions from associated personnel.

  8. Bridge or gantry crane is parked in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safe work procedures.

  9. Bridge or gantry crane lifting gear and associated equipment are stowed and secured in accordance with safe work procedures.

  • Reached 18 years of age to sit the SafeWork Queensland assessment.

The application form for a new Queensland HRW Licence must be completed online on the Worksafe QLD site. 

The application must be submitted within 60 days after the successful completion of the practical assessment. 

A Candidate Assessment Summary (CAS) is a document that shows the results of an assessment or part of an assessment. Students should keep their CAS as well as the proof of payment for the application for the licence to legally prove they can lawfully perform the work until they receive their HRW licence.

    6. Lifts are determined within the RC of the bridge or gantry crane in accordance with load chart/s and lift plan. 

    7. Hook block is safely positioned over the load in accordance with safe work procedures and if crane is controlled from cabin following directions from associated personnel.

    8. Bridge or gantry crane is parked in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safe work procedures.

    9. Bridge or gantry crane lifting gear and associated equipment are stowed and secured in accordance with safe work procedures.

    Entry requirements 

    • Reached 18 years of age to sit the SafeWork Queensland assessment.
    • A general construction induction card (commonly known as a white card).
    • Proof of Queensland residential address
    • 100 points for identification for the SafeWork assessment.
    • Students will need to have a basic understanding and knowledge of English.

    The application form for a new Queensland HRW Licence must be completed online on the Worksafe QLD site. 

    The application must be submitted within 60 days after the successful completion of the practical assessment. 

    A Candidate Assessment Summary (CAS) is a document that shows the results of an assessment or part of an assessment. Students should keep their CAS as well as the proof of payment for the application for the licence to legally prove they can lawfully perform the work until they receive their HRW licence.
