Welcome to the Medication Calculations Competency for Enrolled Nurses course. This resource has been developed to provide a competency assessment for enrolled nurses whose scope of practice includes the administration of medications. The competency assessment provides a baseline by which nurses can assess their skills with performing medication calculations. Please note this competency does not include calculations for administering intravenous medications.

This competency course will assess your ability to:
- calculate oral tablet and capsule doses
- calculate oral mixture and solution doses
- calculate intramuscular and subcutaneous injection doses, and
- perform metric conversions.
In order to successfully complete the Medication Calculation Competency course, you need to achieve a score of 100%. You have unlimited attempts at each section of the competency assessment.
Warning about cheating in online assessments
Online assessments, such as this competency, provide opportunities for some clinicians to cheat. Cheating in this situation includes:
- asking and/or paying other staff to complete online assessments on your behalf
- printing ‘cheat sheets’ and making these available to other staff, or
- using cheat sheets provided by other staff.
Cheating in eLearning courses is likely to be viewed as unprofessional conduct by your colleagues, your employer, and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Of greater concern is that cheating in online assessments puts patients at risk.
This competency must be undertaken by yourself without assistance from others or cheat sheets.
A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 80% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
