Background - What is team effectiveness?

The ability of a team to achieve its goals and objectives over time is called team effectiveness. Leaders must create environments that encourage and balance employee performance and well-being in order for teams to be effective.

High-performing teams can consistently achieve their goals. They are more productive and more involved in their work and their relationships. They are resilient, which may not be what you think -- we'll get into that later). Their vibrancy positively impacts the culture and teams around them.

The authors of ‘Teams that Work – The Seven Drivers of Effectiveness (Tannenbaum and Salas) share the following tips:

1 - Team performance: The team produces positive results over time.

2 - Team resilience: They overcome challenges and bounce back from adversity

3 – Team vitality - The team has the energy, vibrancy and resources to succeed in the future.

Five components that make up an effective team are:

1 – Psychological - Team members feel comfortable taking risks and asking for feedback. They also feel secure being vulnerable before others. People are comfortable admitting to their failures and bringing up any issues.

2 - Trust: Team members have each other's back for timely completion and a common standard of excellence. Everyone in your team is aware of what's going on and communicates progress and deadlines.

3 - Structure and clarity. All members of the team have clear roles, plans and goals. Clear processes are used to make decisions. Each project has a single owner. This ensures that everyone is accountable for their work and helps them to keep their promises.

4 – Sense of purpose: Team members feel a sense of purpose through their work. Examples of purpose are: Financial security, support for family, helping the group succeed, and self-expression.

5 - Impact: Team members believe that their work is important and can bring about change.
