Maintain work health and safety course online (based on HLTWHS003)

Welcome to Maintain work health and safety course. This course has been designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to implement and monitor work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and work practices as part of a small work team. It applies to workers who have a key role in maintaining WHS in an organisation, including duty of care for other workers.

About this course

Training Provider: OHS.com.au with AlertForce (RTO Code 91826)

Location: Online

Course length: Approx. 4 hours (awareness version)

Time: Self-paced

Certification / Accreditation: Certificate of Completion* or Statement of Attainment depending on what is purchased

CPD Points: Yes. 4 points as certificate of completion or 5 points as Statement of Attainment.

Background – How to make your workplace safer?

Everyone is needed to ensure a safe and healthy workplace. Talk to your workers about safety, health, and work issues. They can help you identify hazards and determine the best way to manage them. This shows workers that you care about their safety and health. It is also important to consult anyone who has WHS duties for the same issue, such as when other businesses are involved with the same activity or share the same workplace.

1. Risk identification - This means finding anything that could harm people. Most hazards come from:

  1. - A noisy workplace is a negative environment for employees.
  2. - Equipment, materials, and substances that you use, including chemicals.
  3. - How the work tasks are performed, for example lifting heavy boxes.

2. Risk evaluation - Think about what could happen if someone is exposed to a hazard and how likely it is this could happen. Do a risk assessment to find out:

  1. How dangerous is a risk
  2. Whether any of the control measures you use work
  3. What you can do to reduce the risk
  4. How quickly you must do it.

3. Risk control - The most effective control measure is to eliminate the hazard and any risk it creates. The best way to do this is to avoid introducing hazards in the first place. If you cannot eliminate the hazard, you must minimise the risks as much as you can, such as:

  1. Replace the danger with something more secure
  2. Separate the hazards from the people physically
  3. Use an engineering control, such as a trolley to transport a heavy box rather than carrying it.

You must take administrative measures to reduce the risk, such as using safe work practices. Training and supervision should be provided to ensure that your workers are able to perform their jobs safely. Check your control measures regularly to make sure they’re working as planned. Don’t wait for something to go wrong. It’s a good idea to schedule in regular inspections of your workplace to check for new hazards and review your control measures.

4 - Keep COVID-19 safe To keep you and your employees safe and limit the spread of COVID-19, every employer should do the following at their workplace:

  1. Encourage all employees to wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds using soap and water, or alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  2. Be aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, sore throat, and shortness-of-breath) and ensure that workers don't come to work if they feel unwell
  3. Make sure that your workplace is regularly cleaned- External site and disinfected.
  4. Safe Work Australia has established a COVID-19 safety and health information hub for small businesses.

It provides tailored information and tools that can help businesses manage COVID-19 risks and keep employees safe at work.
