CPCWHS1001 (Work Safely in the Construction Industry) is a training course commonly known as the ‘White Card’ training, which is mandatory for anyone working at construction sites in ACT. On top of this you will also need Asbestos Awareness and Silica Awareness Training - also mandatory in the ACT.

This training course is designed to provide you with the essential work health and safety training required before starting construction work in ACT. 

Throughout this course, you will develop a strong understanding of health and safety legislative requirements, enabling you to work safely and prevent injuries to yourself and others.

Can you take the White Card (CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) course online?

In the ACT, you must complete the CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry course face-to-face and not online. Webinar training (face to screen) is also permitted.

However, you might also be eligible for training subsidies if you meet specific criteria.

CPCWHS1001 Course Background and History

In the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), a White Card is essential for anyone working at a construction site. 

It's officially known as the General Construction Induction Card. 

This card proves you've completed the necessary safety training to work safely in construction. 

Even owner-builders are encouraged to have one as a best practise. 

To get your White Card, you need to complete the General Construction Induction Training and then apply to Access Canberra for the card. 

It's a crucial step to ensure safety and compliance in the construction industry.

Before starting construction work in the ACT, it's essential to complete mandatory work health and safety training. 

This training is designed to ensure that you are aware of health and safety laws, helping you work safely and avoid injuries to yourself and others. 

You'll learn how to identify and report common hazards on construction sites, understand basic ways to manage risks and know how to respond to potential incidents and emergencies. 

Additionally, you'll be trained on how to select and properly wear personal protective equipment (PPE) commonly used in construction.

This training aligns with the general construction induction requirements, including:

• The Model Work Health and Safety Regulations, particularly Part 1.1 and Part 6.5.

• Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia.

• Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria.

Remember, this is just the general induction training. 

Specific site inductions should be conducted before you start working on a particular construction site.

White Card Essentials in the ACT

• Validity: Your White Card is valid indefinitely if you stay active in the construction industry. If inactive for over two years, refresher training is required.

• Getting Your White Card:

• Complete a general induction training course like CPCCWHS1001.

• Apply through Access Canberra.

• Approval can take up to a month.

• Receive your card by mail within two weeks of approval.

• Lost or Stolen Card: Apply for a replacement through a registered training organisation.

• Cancelled Card: If cancelled by the Work Health and Safety Commissioner, you must retake the test and get new certification before returning to work.

• Recognition: A White Card is recognised for construction work across all Australian states and territories.

There has been no major changes to the course content recently. 

While specific regulations may be updated from time to time, the fundamental concepts taught in the White Card course remain stable.

Ensure you have the necessary identification documents, such as your driver's licence or birth certificate, to enrol in the course.

Successful Completion

Competent participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. 

Please note that AlertForce does not issue the White Card.

For ACT Attendees: You have 60 days from the date on your certificate to apply for your White Card. You must apply through Access Canberra, and the application fee is $42.00.

For NSW Attendees: The training organisation will apply for your card on your behalf through Safe Work NSW.

Can You Get a Refund or Training Subsidies for the Course Cost in the ACT?

Yes, up to 70% of the course cost may be refundable for eligible applicants through the ACT Building and Construction Industry Training Fund.
