What are hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods?
Hazardous chemicals are chemicals that have the potential to harm human health and the environment.
Dangerous goods include any chemicals that are:
- corrosive
- flammable
- explosive
- toxic
- oxidising
- infectious
- radioactive
- organic peroxides
- spontaneously combustible, or
- water-reactive.
Hazardous chemicals are classified on the basis of immediate or long-term health effects, while dangerous goods are classified on the basis of immediate physical or chemical effects.
Exposure to hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods
You may be exposed to hazardous chemicals or dangerous goods when:
- testing or remedying potentially contaminated land
- conducting environmental monitoring
- accessing sites for the purpose of inspection and surveying to facilitate design
- constructing, demolishing or cleaning, which includes the use of oxy-acetylene, cleaning chemicals, construction materials and coatings, or
- when maintenance takes place.
A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 80% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
