Background – What is a person-centred approach?
Person-centred approaches were developed in the disability industry and are used today in areas such as mental health, aged care services and schools. In teams and organizations, person-centred approaches are used to ensure that the attention is on the needs of the people receiving support and their families. Staff also need to be aware of how they can support them. Person-centred approaches help us see people as individuals with unique gifts and contributions.
Person-centred approaches can be described as a "toolbox", or a variety of ways to listen and collect information with people. People can choose the path that is best for them by using evidence-based resources. Like any tool, they only work if the user is able to master them and continue to learn from others. This approach ensures people are listened to and kept in the center of every decision, including how services are commissioned, provided, and organized.
Planning roles will require people to be person- centred in order to support the individuals they are supporting in deciding where they want to go. Person-centred principles must be incorporated into every day practice at all levels of organizations to ensure plans are followed through and that support continues to make sense for the individual.
