Healthcare settings should be equipped to prevent the spread of infection and reduce the likelihood of developing antimicrobial resistance. A risk management system that is effective in infection prevention and control includes the identification and assessment of hazards and the control of those who are exposed.

This requires collaboration, coordination, and consultation between the health service organization, patients, consumers and workers. To assist health service organizations in meeting the requirements of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and National Safety and Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards, the Commission has created a variety of resources. These resources are developed in consultation with the Commission's Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Committee and are designed to assist health service organisations, their workforce and their consumers in implementing effective infection prevention and control practices.

Aims and Objectives of this course

This course Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures (based on HLTINF001) will help you earn the skills necessary to follow hand hygiene practices in accordance with organisations policies and procedures and to implement hand care procedures and cover cuts and abrasions. Whilst this course is not nationally recognized, it follows the learning outcomes and elements associated with that unit. The course contains

This course will include an understanding of awareness of the relevant legislation and your responsibilities in complying with infection prevention and control policies and procedures. Learning outcomes include:

  1. . Follow organisation procedures for choice and use of personal protection equipment
  2. . Follow procedures for respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
  3. . Follow procedures for environmental cleaning
  4. . Follow procedures for handling, transporting and processing of linen in a manner that controls the spread of infection
  5. . Follow procedures for disposal of contaminated waste
  6. . Follow procedures for handling and cleaning client equipment that prevents skin and mucous membrane exposures, contamination of clothing, and transfer of pathogens
  7. . Identify and respond to situations where additional precautions may be required to prevent transmission of infection
  8. . Identify infection hazards associated with own role and work environment
  9. . Identify own areas of responsibility in relation to infection prevention and control
