This course has been developed to provide care and support workers with an understanding of how to assist clients in aged care, home and community settings with their medication needs.

Welcome to the Assist Clients with Medication course. The course has been designed to provide you with an understanding of how to assist clients in aged care, home and community settings with their medication needs.

After completing this course you will be able to:

  1. ensure you have the authority to proceed to assist a client with their medication
  2. prepare the client for assistance after identifying the level and type of physical assistance or supervision required
  3. assist and support the administration of a wide range of different types of medications
  4. understand some of the ways medications are classified
  5. identify lines of authority, accountability and actions to be taken to handle contingencies
  6. complete the documentation associated with the administration of medication, and
  7. implement hygiene and duty of care procedures when addressing the needs of the client.

This course looks at assistance with medication provided by care or support workers in response to assessed client need and in accordance with:

  1. the relevant health, support or care plan, and
  2. jurisdictional requirements.

The course covers the distribution and administration of prescribed and over the counter medication as well as how to support clients with self-medication.

Those who require assistance may be residents or clients, but for consistency the term clients is used in this course.

 

This course supports the theoretical component of the unit of competency:

- CHCCS305C Assist Clients with Medication.

This unit can be completed as part of a Certificate III or Certificate IV level qualification within the CHC08 Community Services Training Package.

A pre-requisite for this competency is successful completion of the unit:

- HLTAP301B Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context.

Receiving a nationally recognised outcome

To receive a nationally recognised outcome, you will need to successfully complete a practical assessment of competency with a Registered Training Organisation who is able to issue this unit of competency within their scope of registration. This will need to occur after you have completed this online course. You should check with your chosen Registered Training Organisation about what level of recognition they will grant if you complete this course.

The ‘8 rights’ have been developed to aid in the correct administration of medications and should be a part of all medication administration systems.

Also known as the 8 Rs the 8 rights require you to make sure you have the:

  1. RIGHT client
  2. RIGHT medication
  3. RIGHT dose
  4. RIGHT date and time
  5. RIGHT route
  6. RIGHT method
  7. RIGHT documentation, and respected the
  8. RIGHT to refuse.

These rights must be strictly adhered to during the administration of any medication and will be referred to throughout this training. 

In some states and territories other safety precautions are included that increase the number of rights up to sixteen. This may include making sure you have the:

  1. RIGHT allergies
  2. RIGHT records, including the patient assessment of needs relating to medication assistance
  3. RIGHT education
  4. RIGHT response to the medication
  5. RIGHT handling
  6. RIGHT storage
  7. RIGHT expiry date, and
  8. RIGHT transmission-based precautions.

              A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 80% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
