Blue Mountains Council hits back at asbestos report

A report commissioned by SafeWork NSW about buildings owned by the Blue Mountains City Council has found asbestos present in 19 council-owned buildings.   According to an article published in the Blue Mountains Gazette on the 19 July 2017, some of the 19 “high risk” buildings include a pre-school, a sports centre in Katoomba, two cinemas, a caravan park, a neighbourhood centre and a family support service, as well as the council’s own depot.   Council have said it’s undertaken all the immediate actions recommended in the report and that only two of the buildings required immediate removal of material containing asbestos....

Recycler convicted and fined $150,000 after worker loses hand

A recycling company in Victoria has recently been fined a total of $150,000 following an incident in Coolaroo in 2014, where a worker lost his right hand in an aluminium bailer.   SKM Services were found guilty on two charges of failing to provide or maintain a plant that was safe and without risk to health and of failing to provide a safe system of work.   The court was told the worker was moving a bale of cans from the exit point of an aluminium-bailing machine when his right hand was severed. Staying safe around scaffolding

WorkSafe Victoria is urging builders and contractors to make scaffolding safety a priority on Victorian construction sites after a string of serious injuries and near misses in recent months.   Throughout July and August, WorkSafe inspectors will be visiting construction sites to ensure sites are managing the hazards and risks associated with the use of scaffolds.
